Feather color is a highly prized trait in chickens. One of the genes that controls feather color has two alleles, black (Bl) and

blue (bl+). A chicken that has two black alleles (Bl/Bl) is black, and a chicken that has two blue alleles is blue (bl+/bl+). However, a chicken that inherits one of each trait (Bl/bl+) is an intermediate of the two. If two intermediate-colored chickens together produced 100 chicks, how many would you expect to be black?

Answer: Twenty five (25) of the chicks will be black.

Explanation: A cross between two heterozygous chicks (Bl/bl+) will produce four chicks; one will be Bl/Bl, two will be Bl/bl+ while one will be bl+/bl+.

A break down of the phenotypes is as follows:

Genotype ==> Phenotype

Bl/Bl ==> Black

Bl/bl+ ==> intermediate

bl+/bl+ ==> blue.

Since one out of four offsprings (1/4) is black, therefore if the two chicken produce 100 chicks, the number of chicks that will be black is 1/4 x 100 = 25.

What form of pollution, if any, does each energy source cause?

The forms of pollution that each energy source cause include air, land, water, and even space and noise pollution.
The economy influences energy source choices by the cost efficiency consideration of choosing an energy source. There must be enough money to run the energy production and maintain the energy source.
Location influences energy source choices in such a way that different locations offer different availability of different resources.<span />

In general, the ld50 for exotoxins is much greater than the ld50 for endotoxins.
storchak [24]
FALSE!!
Endotoxins are just the lipid parts of a gram negative cell wall that have broken off when the bacteria dies. They are moderately toxic, cause fever and can make you pretty sick.
Exotoxins are proteins made by pathogenic bacteria (mostly gram positive). These highly toxic. Examples of diseases caused by these are diphtheria, botulism and tetanus.
Therefore it doesn't take much exotoxin to cause a problem!

What was the cause of the increase in the numbers of black moths in England in the 1800s
dezoksy [38]

"Like many moths in forests, the peppered moth tends to rest (or "perch") on tree trunks during the day. They do most of their flying at night. So it would probably be a good thing if the moths look similar to the trees that they perch on, right? Then they can be camouflaged from birds that want to eat them.

Before the Industrial Revolution, the light peppered moth was common, while the dark form was very rare. The light moths blended in with the light-colored trees. However, the Industrial Revolution changed the tree colors.

Dark form of the peppered moth

After the pollution from the Industrial Revolution started affecting trees, most of the collected peppered moths were of the dark form. Click for more detail.

As the trees darkened with soot, the light-colored moths were easier to see. They were eaten by birds more and more, while the rare dark colored moths blended in better on the darker trees. This made the dark colored moths have a higher survival rate. They lived longer and passed their dark colored genes onto their offspring or young.
