What causes jane to question and fear the events of the third floor?

Jane hears weird noises across the Eyre hallway. During the night, she can tell that there are vague murmurs and unknown sound within the walls that causes her fear up until a snarling growl occured where Mason was there in a bloody scene at the third floor and she's wondering why.
