After his term, Burr was suspected of involvement in a plot to create a separate republic in the then Southwestern US, headed by himself. For this he was arrested in 1807. He was tried for treason but was acquitted. After a stay abroad, Burr returned to New York in 1812 and resumed his career as a lawyer.
