In 1949, after the Chinese Civil War, Communist forces led by Mao Zedong defeated the Kuomintang, the nationalist forces led by Chiang Kai-shek. Consequently, on October 1, 1949, the People’s Republic of China was founded. Chinese communists took control of the new government, implementing radical changes in the economic system as well as a cultural revolution that would last more than two decades.
