The pilgrimage to Mecca is also known as Hajj. This is a religious even that every muslim man and women have to do at least once in their life.

The effect of going there could be finding a spiritiual attachment to god. Also by going for Hajj, all of your bad sins are erased.

Hope that helps :)

I don't really get what you mean by this question but here goes:

The pilgrimage to Mecca was called 'Hajj'.
When you go to make Hajj all of your sins are erased. It's like being born again.

The only woman the knight comes across in the forest is described as an 'ugly hag'. Considering this, this woman might be the one who could be able to save the knight from his doom. She is someone who may be of enchantment or special powers who may transform into someone beautiful once the knight has proven his insight from his experience which will later be the moral of the story.
