The 32nd president of the United States of America, Franklin D. Roosevelt, used an executive order on April 5, 1933 to establish the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). The CCC formed part of of the strategies he put in place to help combat the rising unemployment rates during the great depression.
Over hundreds of thousands of young men were assigned to work on environmental conservation projects. During a nine year period, they planted over 3 billion trees and constructed different shelters and trails in eight hundred parks throughout the country.
