Some northerners object to dividing the Nebraska Territory in two because it would give a chance to slavery to spread to the north of the line established by the Missouri Compromise-

The differences between people that favored slavery and the people who don't, created violent conflicts that derived in what was called <em>"Bleeding Kansas",</em> previous hostilities to the American Civil war.

<em>Stephen A. Douglas</em> proposed to split territories of Nebraska and Kansas to repeal the Missouri Compromise line.
