The North American geologists were so resistant to Alfred Wegener's theory or idea of the Continental Drift because they thought his theory merely made literature difficult and confused the mind of students. The explosion of the Maine in Cuba on February 15, 1898 was ruled by a Naval Court of Inquiry in March of 1898 as caused by a mine explosion. Subsequantly many different views of what caused the explosion have been put forward to a fire in her coal bunkers to a fire in her powder magazines. In 1976 a group of American Naval Investigators concluded that a fire ignited the Maines magazines.
The answer to the question however remains that experts cannot definitively say what the cause of the explosion was.
When President Roosevelt said on December 7, 1941 that the date would live in infamy he meant that the day would be remembered as a dishonorable and disgraceful day in American history do to the large loss of life from the Pearl Harbor attacks. Therefore, out of these words Roosevelt was equating the attacks to being done in manner that could be equated with "dishonor."
