Pope commanded Christian followers to burn Pagan temples and build in the same site of the burned Pagan temple a Christian church in attempt to convert Pagans into the Christian faith.

Christians began to preach the devil and being identical to the Pagan God, Hunter.

There's a lot of reasons but majority of it could be listed as fear.
