Using a comma without a conjunction would just be adding on to the problem, it would still be one long sentence. Therefore it would be a run-on sentence.
Given the risks associated with escaping slavery, having 100,000 people escape is an incredible number and speaks to the bravery and desperation of those being held as slaves.
