The central idea that the author develops throughout The Dark Game is that during the Civil War, ordinary individuals who wanted to aid the war effort acted as spies. In a chauvinistic society, women were rarely noticed or seen as suspicious, so they took advantage of this and used them as spies.

The central theme about the Dark Game was dangerous it was to be a spy. Elizabeth took many risks in gathering and sending information to the Union lines. She also took care to help Union escapees get back to their troops. It was dangerous but she firmly believed in preserving the Union and took the risk to all of this.

Richie had felt a mad, exhilarating kind of energy growing in the room. . . . He thought he recognized the feeling from his childhood, when he felt it everyday and had come to take it merely as a matter of course. He supposed that, if he had ever thought about that deep-running aquifer of energy as a kid (he could not recall that he ever had), he would have simply dismissed it as a fact of life, something that would always be there, like the color of his eyes . . . . Well, that hadn't turned out to be true. The energy you drew on so extravagantly when you were a kid, the energy you thought would never exhaust itself—that slipped away somewhere between eighteen and twenty-four, to be replaced by something much duller . . . purpose, maybe, or goals . . . . Read the excerpt from "Marriage Is a Private Affair" by Chinua Achebe.
irinina [24]

The right answer is the mandate to marry within one's tribe. Even though Nnaemeka knew that his decision to marry a woman from another tribe would upset his father, he thought that his annoyance would eventually pass away. But he had not realized that his was a decision without precedent, and this caused surprise, indignation, and sadness among his people, who, stuck to tradition, saw in Nnaemeka's act a reflection of their Lord's cautionary teachings ("Sons shall rise against their fathers") and a bad omen ("It is the beginning of the end"), hence illustrating their conviction in the mandate to marry within one's tribe.

Use the following definitions to answer the question. evade: 1. (verb) to cleverly escape somebody or something, to avoid invade
irina1246 [14]

The sentence that contains the correct word usage of evade versus invade is "Corn leaf aphids invaded the crop and caused damage to the plants." If we replace the word invaded with its definition we can see why. The sentence would read, "Corn leaf aphids entered the crop and caused damage to the plant. This makes sense. A corn leaf aphid is a pest, so it would not make sense if they evaded or left the plant and caused damage. That would be a good thing.

You can use the same technique to see why the other three sentences use the incorrect word.

The thieves were able to invade being arrested by the police.

This would read, "The thieves were able to enter being arrested by the police. This does not make sense. Rather, it should read, "The thieves were able to evade being arrested by the police." Thus, meaning they were able to cleverly escape being arrested.

Guerrilla forces evaded the capital city and announced their power.

This would read, "Guerrilla forces cleverly escaped the capital city and announced their power." While this sentence could make sense in the right context, it is more likely that they forcefully entered the capital city, or invaded it, in order to announce their power.

Sheila tried to evade the private party by bribing the security guard.

This would read, "Sheila tried to cleverly escape the private party by bribing the security guard." Again, this could make sense in the right context, but it is most likely that she bribed the security guard in order to enter a party that she wanted to intend. Therefore, the use of "invade" makes more sense.
