Ponyboy seems to be an outsider. He says that he is a Greaser, but then he also says that he "loned it" (3). Even though he feels as though he belongs to the Greasers, he shows that he is not like other Greasers. He says that he "digs movies and books" (3). Ponyboy likes them because he puts himself into the story with the characters to experience it, not just as mind-numbing entertainment. Ponyboy seems to be a good person. He has a big heart and seems to care for others. He doesn't look at a person and label them in the story. Throughout he begins to notice that people are more than just a Soc or just a Greaser. It begins when he meets Cherry and Marcia at the movies. After Bob's death, Ponyboy starts to see Randy as more than just a Soc as well. I think I would want to be friends with Ponyboy since he offers a different perspective of things, and I know that he would be loyal and have my back.

What contribution does the character of odysseus make to overall purpose and meaning of the text?
iris [78.8K]

Answer: Odysseus has the defining character traits of a Homeric leader: strength, courage, nobility, a thirst for glory, and confidence in his authority. His most distinguishing trait, however, is his sharp intellect. Odysseus’s quick thinking helps him out of some very tough situations, as when he escapes from the cave of the Cyclops in Book 9, or when he hides his slaughter of the suitors by having his minstrel strike up a wedding tune in Book 23.

Why is it said the beatitudes promote values that are in direct contrast to what the world promote?
Mama L [17]

Answer

It is because world values promote the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, the arrogance of life, selfishness, and seeking material gain. These values contradict the teachings of Christ Jesus of becoming humble, selfless, and seekers of God and His righteousness.

Explanation

For the world offers only a craving for physical pleasure (lust of the flesh), a craving for everything we see (lust of the eyes), and pride in our achievements and possessions (the arrogance of life). These are not from the Father but are from this world.

Matthew 5:3-11 (NLT)

The Beatitudes

3 “God blesses those who are poor and realize their need for him (poor in spirit) for the Kingdom of Heaven is theirs.

4 God blesses those who mourn,

  for they will be comforted.

5 God blesses those who are humble,

for they will inherit the whole earth.

6 God blesses those who hunger and thirst for justice,

  for they will be satisfied.

7 God blesses those who are merciful,

for they will be shown mercy.

8 God blesses those whose hearts are pure,

  for they will see God.

9 God blesses those who work for peace,

for they will be called the children of God.

10 God blesses those who are persecuted for doing right,

for the Kingdom of Heaven is theirs.

11 “God blesses you when people mock you and persecute you and lie about you and say all sorts of evil things against you because you are my followers. 12 Be happy about it! Be very glad! For a great reward awaits you in heaven. And remember, the ancient prophets were persecuted in the same way.
