<span> The South was placed under military rule and divided into military districts. Southern states then had to apply for readmission to the Union. 
</span><span>The nation was reunited and the southern states were not allowed to secede.
</span><span> The Federal government proved itself supreme over the states. Essentially this was a war over states rights and federalism and the victor was the power of the national government

 ended. While slavery was not officially outlawed until the passage of the 13th amendment, the slaves were set free upon the end of the war.

That's survival 101. If you lived near streams you were guaranteed water. Also near streams the soil was rich was a key factor of agriculture. This was a key factor of life. If you look in todays world, most of the world population is found near bodies of water. Hope I helped. :)

Henry Seward expands the antislavery argument beyond the moral appeal of the abolitionist by talking about or addressing the country as a whole and not just about the slaves. He doesn't use the term "slaves" to refer it to them but rather, he calls them as "the laborers", so that, those who are non abolitionist would imagine slaves as laborers or working men. He also once said, as quoted, “the united states must and will, sooner or later, become either entirely a slaveholding nation, or entirely a free labor nation." Hope this answer helps.
