1. In 1821, New Mexico was a territory controlled by Spain

2. Men, and a few women, who traveled the Santa Fe Trail did so to get help for the caring or to see new opportunities

3. It took more than a month to travel from Missouri to New Mexico along the Santa Fe Trail.

4. James Magoffin was sent to Santa Fe on a Secret mission to persuade the governor of New Mexico not to fight the U.S.  Army  that was coming to capture New Mexico

5. Following Magoffin's trip, the United States Army took New Mexico, and it became a U.S. Territory

6. In 1879, when the railroad reached New Mexico, people stopped using the Santa Fe Trail.
