1. In 1821, New Mexico was a territory controlled by Spain

2. Men, and a few women, who traveled the Santa Fe Trail did so to get help for the caring or to see new opportunities

3. It took more than a month to travel from Missouri to New Mexico along the Santa Fe Trail.

4. James Magoffin was sent to Santa Fe on a Secret mission to persuade the governor of New Mexico not to fight the U.S.  Army  that was coming to capture New Mexico

5. Following Magoffin's trip, the United States Army took New Mexico, and it became a U.S. Territory

6. In 1879, when the railroad reached New Mexico, people stopped using the Santa Fe Trail.

7. In 1846, many immigrants came to the United States from Ireland because Potato Famine Killed destroyed the potato crop and people were starving.  Another reason they came was because small farmers were being being taxed more than the rich.

8. People in Germany emigrated to the United States to find jobs and food

9. The Chinese came to America to help build the First Transcontinental Railroad

10. Briefly describe the people that came to America in the 1800s.

Many immigrants came to America seeking greater economic opportunity, while some, such as the Pilgrims in the early 1600s, arrived in search of religious freedom. African slaves came to America against their will.
