Answer:

The last great West African empire fell

Explanation:

The Songhai Empire, also known as the Songhay Empire, was a state located in West Africa. From the beginning of the 15th century until the end of the 16th century, Songhai was one of the greatest Islamic empires in history. This empire was named after its main ethnic group, the Songhai. Its capital was the city of Gao, where a Songhai state had existed since the eleventh century. Its power base was located on the banks of the Niger River, in the current Niger and Burkina Faso.

In 1591 Sultan Mulay Ahmad of Morocco, knowing the internal weakness of the Songhay Empire, sent an army of mercenaries against him, who conquered the empire after the battle of Tondibi. After this battle, the sovereign was killed and the empire became a province of Morocco. Timbuktu was destroyed by a Moroccan expedition equipped with firearms, sent by Sultan Ahmad al-Mansur, who wanted to benefit from the gold trade. Thus came the end of one of the great African empires.
