This will tell a reader what explicit aspects of the characters’ personalities are put forth to all the other characters in a story, and helps us to better understand how to view the character.

Actions

The actions and behaviors of the characters show what truly drives and motivates the characters. How they physically or verbally interact with other characters in the story shows their overall position as good-natured or mean-spirited, sympathetic or selfish. The behavior that the characters show is just a product of how they feel inside, which is why how the character acts is such a great indicator of personality.

Looks

The look and appearance of characters can tell a lot about them. The dress of characters also provides a look into their personalities. For example, if the characters are constantly dressed up in expensive clothing, this could point to great education and money, while the characters dressed in clothes with holes in them could appear less well-off. However, since outward appearances can be deceiving, it’s also important to take expression and body language into consideration.

Ponyboy - book

He is the thinker and dreamer of the group. A book would be the perfect symbol for him as he values his education and loves to read. He chose to write a book for his English theme.

Sodapop - rope for tug of war

Soda says he constantly feels as though he is being pulled in two different directions when Darry and Ponyboy fight. He does not like to be the man in the middle.

Darry - Atlas holding the rock

This would be a good symbol for Darry as he feels that he is responsible for anything that happens to the family and in part also anything that happens with the rest of the Greasers. He gave up what could've been a college education when his parents died to stay home and keep the family together. This responsibility weighs on him just like Atlas's rock.

Johnny - puppy

Johnny is a scared puppy. Ponyboy calls him the "pet" of the gang. They are always looking out for him. He is not wanted at home and is frequently abused when he is home.
