Jackie is writing about how Esperanza changes in Esperanza Rising. He reads this passage. Puzzled, Isabel looked at Esperanza. "

Don't you know how to wash clothes?" "Well, Hortensia took everything out to the laundry quarters. And the servants, they always . . . " She looked at Isabel and shook her head no. How can Jackie best explain a change in Esperanza as the story develops? At first, Esperanza doesn’t know how to wash clothes, then she pays Isabel to do the laundry for her. In the beginning, Esperanza has to wash dirty diapers; later, she hires a maid named Hortensia. Esperanza is first embarrassed that she can’t do laundry, but later she decides she likes sweeping best. Once Esperanza had a maid to do her laundry; later, she asks Isabel to teach her to wash clothes.

Answer:

Once Esperanza had a maid to do her laundry; later, she asks Isabel to teach her to wash clothes.

Explanation:

This is the best way to explain the change that takes place in Esperanza as the story develops. We learn that Esperanza had a maid named Hortensia. We know this because Esperanza implies that before, Hortensia took her clothes away to be washed by servants. Esperanza is embarrased by this fact. However, we now see that Esperanza is learning how to wash her own clothes from Isabel.

Explanation:

Jackie can explain how Esperanza has become more self-aware and less embarrassed to ask for help unlike how earlier in the story she just use someone to do her work for her until now where she has built up the courage to ask how to wash clothes which also makes her less selfish in a way, meaning she (Esperanza) is more kinder and self-aware.
