How do mountains affect the amount of precipitation that falls over falls over an area

The mountains take the rain on the westward side most of the time so the eastern side doesnt get any.

Mountains have a higher altitude, and the higher up you are the colder it gets. Think about that and you should be able to come up with a pretty good answer!! Let me know if you need more help :)
