She then insisted that they run away together and that he would do it if he really loved her. He didn't like the idea but at the end, her ran away with her as he had no choice since his lieutenant came back to arrest her and the fight between them occurred. They ran away to the mountains but as the time passed by, she, being the free-spirited lady she is, has no intention of settling down and she became very bored with Jose in short time. The closing act shows us the murder of Carmen, who was stabbed to death by Jose, because she didn't want a life with him and stated that she '' was born free and will die free '' .
