Altruism involves doing everything selflessly without giving importance to our personal advantage. This type of behavior is somewhat influenced by our genes. If we or generous by nature then this might be the result of our genes.

Yes being an altruist is detrimental to one's own well being, but is not in anybody's hand to be an altruist. It is automatically in our genes. So this gene is automatically passed on to later generations.
