This power of Congress is one that impacts the day-to-day of Americans' lives. This is why the votes for congressional representatives are so important as they are creating the laws dictating the rights of citizens.

According to article 1, section 8, the U.S. Constitution defines two kinds of powers Enumerated Powers and Implied Powers the rights of Congress.

Congress is the main legislative body of the government. The general powers of Congress are defined in article 1 of the US Constitution. Additional powers are granted to Congress through constitutional amendments. The implied powers of the Congress are derivational from the Necessary and Proper Clause present in the constitution. Congress has financial and budgetary powers like the power to levy and collect taxes, to pay debts, provide for general welfare and defence mechanism of the United States.  

The power of taxation was increased through the 16th amendment in 1913 that included income taxes as well. The Congress also has the power to appropriate funds.  This power ensures a check on the executive branch. It regulates commerce, foreign relations. Congress plays a beneficial role in national defence like to wage a war, maintain the armed forces, making rules for the military. Congress has the authority to create post offices, post roads and issue patents.  

Article four grants power to Congress to allow new states admission into the union.
