In fact there was little resistance to the <u>US take over and only 7 people were killed. A nationalist movement in the 1930s gained popularity and it resisted assimilation into the US. It was made into a US commonwealth country eventually that could elect its own governor. Oscar Lopez Rivera, a fighter for Puerto Rican independence was freed recently in the US after a 35 year jail term. </u>
US forces faced little reaction when they decided to take Puerto Rico from Spain in the course of its war with them. This <span>last Spanish outpost in the Caribbean was secured with little resistance and few American casualties in August of 1898. After the Spanish-American War ended a few months later, the island was officially ceded to the US.
