In fact there was little resistance to the <u>US take over and only 7 people were killed. A nationalist movement in the 1930s gained popularity and it resisted assimilation into the US. It was made into a US commonwealth country eventually that could elect its own governor. Oscar Lopez Rivera, a fighter for Puerto Rican independence was freed recently in the US after a 35 year jail term. </u>

US forces faced little reaction when they decided to take Puerto Rico from Spain in the course of its war with them.  This <span>last Spanish outpost in the Caribbean was secured with little resistance and few American casualties in August of 1898.  After the Spanish-American War ended a few months later, the island was officially ceded to the US. </span>

One theory is that in order to move the giant heads from one part of island to the other itrequired them to cut down trees to use them as rollers to roll the heads down to the edge of the island. As each generation sought to make a bigger and better statue, it required that more trees be cleared. Eventually, the forest disappeared.
