Sometimes colonies formed to escape political oppression or social tensions back home in Europe. The new England colony serve as a refugee for people who faced religious persecution. Many were also created to profit European company across the ocean as many colonies to the south were. In the new Amsterdam the family of dutch set up the new colony of new Netherland along the Hudson river because they develop the fur trade and built settlements where fur bearing animals were abundant. In the early year of colony settlers traded with Indians and built the settlement of new Amsterdam into a thriving port. Located near good farmland and with safe harbor for ships, new Amsterdam became quickly the center for commerce and trading valuable beaver skins.
