The most obvious indicator that there would eventually be a rift was the circumstances by which colonists left the UK.
Many didn't feel like they belonged in the UK and left to start a new life. It would be only natural that the rift would widen as a result of that lack of belonging.
Because they Knew how to farm so once they where free they just went back to farming cause its what they knew how to do
