The significance of the gettysburg battle in july 1 to 3 in 1863 was the town site in southern pennsylvania in which the union forces finally prevailed on the last day under union george meade. The consequence of picketts charge at gettysburg upon the southern army was half of pickets thirteen-thousand-man division would be killed or wounded. A heavy loss of confederate lives resulted from picketts charge. On the battlefield lay over 50,000 dead and wounded. About half of these were associate and nearly a third of lee's fighting force. Lee uncontrolled his attack of the north and led his staggering army back into Virginia. The south had agonized a crushing defeat. It would never again try to fight on union soil.
