Sodium is a mineral that maintains the normal fluid balance in the body. The daily recommendation is 2,300 mg per day. Limiting sodium will control the fluid around the organs like the heart and lungs. The nurse then can evaluate a client if the patient choose a low-sodium food such as fresh fruits and vegetables, avoiding canned good, avoiding the use of too much salt, MSG and sodium soup.
