This is a simple sentence. It is simple because it only contains one subject and one predicate.

Often times, compound sentences are built up of two simple sentences.

For example, a simple sentence would be "John ate a banana." A compound sentence would be "John ate a banana and he threw away the peel." This is a compound because both "John ate a banana" and "He threw away the peel" are simple sentences that combine with each other to create a compound. The word "and" is used as a conjunction to connect the two simple sentences together.
