since the ratio is 7:5, whatever you times by one number, you would have to times to the other number too. So when there is 140 teddy bears, if you divide 140 by 7, you get 20. Now if you times 5 by 20, you will get 100. There would be 100 dolls when there is 140 teddy bears.

Solve by using Pythagorean Theorem, a= 5, b= x-1, and c=x
charle [14.2K]

The value of x is 13, from the values of x the values of a,b and c becomes 5, 12 and 13, which is obtained by using Pythagorean theorem.

Step-by-step explanation:

The given is,

             a = 5

             b = x - 1

             c = x

Step:1

      Pythagorean theorem is,

              a^{2} + b^{2} = c^{2}................................(1)

      (  It states that the area of the square whose side is the hypotenuse is equal to the sum of the areas of the squares on the other two sides )

      From the given values the equation (1) becomes,

                       5^{2} + (x-1) ^{2} = x^{2}

                             ( (a-b)^{2} = a^{2}  + b^{2} -2ab )

               25 + ( x^{2} + 1 - 2x ) = x^{2}

                           25 + 1 -2x = 0               ( ∵ Eliminate x^{2} in both sides)

                                     26 = 2x

                                       x = 13

Step:2

        From the values of x,

                   a = 5

                    b = ( 13 - 1 ) = 12

                   c = 13

Result:

            The value of x is 13, from the values of x the values of a,b and c becomes 5, 12 and 13, which is obtained by using Pythagorean theorem.

ACTIVITY 2 (19) Mr Duma recently inherited a rectangular plot, part of the estate left by his late father. The plot with the fol
seraphim [82]

The sum of the lengths of three sides of the rectangle, gives the length

of the fencing, while one third of the rectangle area is for the pavement.

Responses:

Project A: The formula for the length of the fencing is, L = 4·x - 1

Project B: Length of the fancy wall = 2·x + 1

Project \ C:Area \ of \ the \ paving = \underline{ \dfrac{2\cdot x^2 }{3} - \dfrac{x }{3}  - \dfrac{1}{3}}

<h3>Which method can be used to find the length and area of paving from the given equations?</h3>

Project A: Let QP and SR represent the longest sides of the rectangle, we have;

PQ = SR = 2·x + 1

Given parameters are;

Length of the rectangular plot = 2·x + 1

Width of the rectangular plot = x - 1

Vertices of the rectangular plot are; QPSR

Project A: Let QP and SR represent the longest sides of the rectangle, we have;

PQ = SR = 2·x + 1

Which gives;

SP = QR = x - 1

The length of the fencing, L = SP + PQ + QR = x - 1 + 2·x + 1 + x - 1 = 4·x - 1

  • The formula for the length of the fencing is, L =<u> 4·x - 1</u>

Project B: The front side is SR

Therefore;

  • Length of the fancy wall = <u>2·x + 1</u>

Project C:

Area, A = Length × Width

Area of the plot, A = (2·x + 1) × (x - 1) = 2·x² - x - 1

  • Area \ of \ the \ paving = \dfrac{1}{3} \times \left(2 \cdot x^2 - x - 1\right) = \underline{ \dfrac{2\cdot x^2 }{3} - \dfrac{x }{3}  - \dfrac{1}{3}}
