Answer: An ionic bond forms when​ there is a complete transfer of valence electrons from one metal atom to a non metal atom.

Explanation: The purpose of the transfer of the valence electrons from a metal atom to a non metal atom is so that the two atoms can attain a noble gas octet or duplet structure. Since there is a loss of electron by the metal atom and gain of electron by the non metal atom, the compound formed is usually ionic. Ionic bond is also called electrovalent bond.

I think it would be to exchange gases.  When you think about it, plants in the past were always underwater.  They didn't have any air.  Now, they are on land and need to be able to exchange gases from the leaves to the roots.
