Slavery in the United States refers to the legal institution that existed in the United States during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. It is estimated that, approximately, in the United States there were one million three hundred thousand black slaves in the middle of the second decade of the nineteenth century, out of a total of eight and a half million inhabitants. Only about two hundred thousand blacks were free. Slaves were treated as merchandise, as objects that could be bought and sold, therefore they lack rights.
