Answer:

Jacques Cartier was commissioned by the King of France in 1534 to lead an expedition westward in search of a "western passage" to East Asia. If found, the western passage would drastically decrease the cost and time it took to bring trade goods from East Asia to Europe. Cartier's still sought the western passage during his second voyage in 1535-36. However, by his third voyage during the early-1540s, Cartier understood that the possibility of finding a western passage was extremely low. At that point, he focused on exploring what would become Canada and claiming the land for the monarchy.
