The cell wall is a tough and rigid layer that surrounds some types of cells. It is located outside the cell membrane and its main function is to provide rigidity, strength, protection against mechanical stress and infection. It can also provide the cell with limited plasticity that will prevent the cell from rupturing due to turgor pressure.

In anaphase I of meiosis, the homologous pairs (one maternal and one paternal chromosome) are moved apart to opposite ends of the cell and this process occurs random. This allows the formation of gametes with different sets of homologues. In this phase sister chromatids remain attached at their centromeres (not segragated as in mitosis).
