Almost all Western Hemisphere countries were into the sphere of influence in China, but primarily the United Kingdom (which continued to have Hong Kong till the 1900s), the United States, France, Germany, and many others. The Opium War started when the Chinese Emperor believed that the lucrative business that the Europeans and Americans were running, or the opium drug, was detrimental to his people. In a effort to stabilize the general public health, he led a war that ended with the defeat and a even greater influence of foreign countries in China.
