The catabolic reactions breaks down the large organic molecule to smaller molecules thus releasing energy contained in the chemical bonds of the larger molecules. The fatty acids stored in the form of triglycerides are released from the fats that are deposited in the adipose tissues in between the meals.

The fatty acid catabolism includes lipolysis which removes the fatty acid chains or the triglycerides into glycerol and other small chain fatty acids.The β- oxidation process occurring the matrix of mitochondria breaks the long chain fatty acids finally to the acetyl-coA molecules. In each cycle of the β-  oxidation 5 ATP molecules are released at the end.
