By establishing in peoples minds that whatever effort you put into a job, you would be rewarded with an equal amount of pay without putting into consideration your age, sex, religion, race, or disability. This sole factor has helped build the US into a strong economic giant and furthermore, establishing huge trust within the system while knowing that every law created or amended will always consider equity.
