Why did the germans attack verdun

History

The attack on Verdun came about because of a plan by the German Chief of general staff Von Falkenhayn. He wanted to "bleed France white" by launching a massive German attack on a narrow stretch of land that had historic value to the French - Verdun. The area around Verdun contained twenty major forts and forty smaller ones that had historically protected the eastern border of France. Falkenhayn believed that the French could not allow these forts to fall as the national humiliation would be too much. By fighting to the last man, Falkenhayn believed the French would lose so many men that the battle would change the course of the war.

What element of politics today started with the election of 1840?
OleMash [197]

The correct answer is B) People's votes show what parties they support.

The element of politics today that started with the election of 1840 was "People's votes show what parties they support."

In the US election of 1840, the Whig party candidate, William Henry Harrison, defeated Democrat Martin Van Beuren. However, a month later after Henry took the Presidential office, he died. Vicepresident John Tyler became the President. In this election, US citizens showed the preference they had when they decided to vote for a Whig candidate, instead of the traditional bipartisan candidates.

How are minor US territories different from Commonwealths or major territories such as Guam?
viva [34]

Unlike the States of the Union or a Commonwealth (Union of several sovereign states), the US territories are considered as sub-national administrative divisions, this means that these territories are without sovereignty and thus they lack representation in Congress and are administered directly by the federal government.

These territories can be classified as incorporated or unincorporated as well as if they have an organized government or not.

It's important to make a note here since the US has 16 territories, 5 of which are inhabited and have a government (Guam, American Samoa, US Virgin Islands, Northern Mariana Islands, and Puerto Rico) and 11 which are islands with no population or government.
