Y = 2x - 9.....slope here is 2. A perpendicular line will have a negative reciprocal slope. All that means is flip the slope and change the sign. So our perpendicular line will have a slope of -1/2.

y - y1 = m(x - x1)
slope)m) = -1/2
(8,-1)....x1 = 8 and y1 = -1
now we sub...pay attention to ur signs
y - (-1) = -1/2(x - 8)...not done yet
y + 1 = -1/2(x - 8) <== ur perpendicular line

Answer:  \sqrt{2}/2 which is Choice B

This is the same as writing \frac{\sqrt{2}}{2}

The second "2" is not under or inside the square root.

==========================================================

Explanation:

Refer to the unit circle below. I've highlighted the angle 45 degrees and its corresponding sine value. It's the y coordinate of the point on the unit circle, for this particular angle.

Therefore, \sin(45^{\circ}) = \frac{\sqrt{2}}{2}

--------------

You could alternatively draw out a 45-45-90 triangle. Let x be the leg length and the hypotenuse is 1 unit long. Solve x^2+x^2 = 1 for x and you should get x = \frac{\sqrt{2}}{2} as the length of each leg.

Then take the ratio of the opposite over hypotenuse to find the same answer mentioned above.

write an equation that is perpendicular to x - 3y =3 and passes through the point (5,-9) in slope-intercept form.

Answer:

  y = -3x +6

Step-by-step explanation:

The perpendicular line will have the coefficients of x and y swapped (and one of them negated), and will have a constant appropriate to the point the line needs to go through.

The equation will look like ...

  x -3y = 3 . . . . . . . . . . . . . given line

  3x +y = constant . . . . . . perpendicular line

where "constant" can be found by substituting for x and y.

  3x +y = 3(5) +(-9)

  3x +y = 6 . . . . equation in standard form

To put this in slope-intercept form subtract 3x:

  y = -3x +6

One math class has a greater number of students than the other. However,
Elden [556K]
The classes could each have proportions of 5 boys to 6 girls, but they don’t necessarily have to be exactly 5 to 6. The number could 5 to 6 for one class, but it could also be 10 to 12 for another class, since 10 to 12 is a scale factor of 5 to 6.
