My goodness !  What are you going to do when you
really need a question mark and you don't have any
because you used them all up ?

You said                                5 - 2x  =  -4x - 7

Add  4x  to each side:           5 + 2x  =        -7

Subtract  5  from each side:       2x  =       -12

Divide each side by  2 :               x  =         -6
