Arthur Miller saw how insanely paranoid people were becaming regarding Comunism. People were accused of being communits and they would lose their families and lives. This was a movement started by the senator McCarthy who stated that there were Communists in the USA that were living in secret, this was followed by an endless succession of accusations. This was very similar to what happened in Salem with the hunting of witches, someone would be accused of witchcraft and their entire family and life would be destroyed for this, and everybody would be obsessed with gossiping and accusing people of witchcraft. Similarly, Miller makes an implicit comparison between witch hunt and "communist hunt" although lots of years separate one from the other.
