Study the illustration below of the plate tectonics affecting the continent of Africa. Divergent plates are causing the East Afr

ican Rift Zone to spread. This area is a deep valley surrounded by mountains, similar to a mid-ocean ridge. What do you predict will eventually happen at the East African Rift Zone?
- Lake Victoria will shrink and disappear as all the plates converge

- The African plate will grow larger as all of the plates converge

- water from the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean will flow into the rift and flood the area

- The Indian Ocean will shrink and disappear as the Rift Zone gets larger

water from the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean will flow into the rift and flood the area

Explanation:

The rift in east Africa is a divergent margin where two plates are moving away from one another.

Eventually, what will happen is that the separation will lead to the formation of  a basin and the water from the nearby ocean will fill it up.

The proximal water body here are the water in the Indian Ocean.

The oceans of the world today were once together and the continents apart too.

When the continents started moving apart, the oceans filled the void left behind. This same process will occur in East Africa rift valley system.

In a diploid species of plant, the genes for plant height and fruit shape are syntenic and separated by 18 m.u. Allele D produce
KiRa [710]

Answer and Explanation:

Crossing-over between two genes that are very close to each other in the chromosome is not that common. Crossing-over during meiosis occurs random positions all along the chromosome. Then, crossing-over frequency between two genes depends on the distance between them. A short distance between genes is a very little target for crossing-over to occur, which means that only a few of them will happen, compared with the number of events between genes that are more separated between each other.

  • Two genes that are very close will have a few recombination events and are strongly bounded.
  • Two separated genes will have more chances of recombination and are not bound.

To calculate the recombination frequency, we have to know that 1% of recombinations = 1 map unit = 1cm. And that the maximum recombination frequency is always 50%.

The map unit is the distance between the pair of genes for which the recombination frequency is 1 in 100 meiotic products.

So, en the exposed example:

a.

Identify the gametes for a plant with the genotype DR/dr and label parental and recombinants

Gametes     DR parental type

                   Dr  recombinant type

                   dr  parental type

                  dR recombinant type

Give the frequency of each gamete type.

18 map units = 18 % of recombination in total

                                    = % Dr + % dR

                                     = 9% + 9%

                100% - 18% = 82% of parental in total =

                                    = % of DR + % dr

                                    = 41% + 41%

The frequency for each gamete is:

DR 41%

dr 41%

Dr 9%

dR 9%

b.

Identify the gametes for a plant with the genotype Dr/dR

Gametes     Dr parental type

                   DR  recombinant type

                   dR  parental type

                   dr recombinant type

Give the frequency of each gamete type.

18 map units = 18 % of recombination in total

                                     = % DR + % dr

                                     = 9% + 9%

                100% - 18% = 82% of parental in total =

                                    = % of Dr + % dR

                                    = 41% + 41%

The frequency for each gamete is:

Dr 41%

dR 41%

dr 9%

DR 9%

What does it mean for a species to emerge
Lesechka [4]

In contrast, genetic drift produces random changes in the frequency of traits in a population. Genetic drift arises from the role chance plays in whether a given individual will survive and reproduce. One definition of a species is a group of organisms that can reproduce with one another and produce fertile offspring.

Where would you expect to find the simplest body<br> plans?
Y_Kistochka [10]
Most sponge body plans are slight variations on a simple tube-within-a-tube design. which of the following is a key limitation of sponge body plans? sponges lack the specialized cell types needed to produce more complex body plans. the reliance on osmosis/diffusion requires a design that maximizes the surface area to volume ratio of the sponge. choanocytes must be protected from the hostile exterior environment. spongin cannot support heavy bodies.
