In a speech, especially a political one, logos seems like the most obvious technique to gain support from an audience. The thing is, Lincoln realized that applying all three techniques would increase his appeal. So, the question is, WHAT was he trying to achieve by this speech exactly? Lincoln realized that a united country is far stronger than one who is divided; rather than using military statistics and economical reasoning, he persuaded the population to come together for reasons that most everyone could relate to. The appeal to pathos is seen when Lincoln says, "...to bind up the nation's wounds, to care for him who shall have borne the battle and for his widow and his orphan," and the appeal to ethos is seen when he says, "With malice toward none, with charity for all, with firmness in the right as God gives us to see the right." The point of his speech, the purpose of his persuasion for people to come together in the post-war destruction to heal the nation can be summarized by the quote, "...let us strive on to finish the work we are in...<span>to do all which may achieve and cherish a just and lasting peace among ourselves and with all nations."
