Answer:   Poor living conditions and political prosecution.

Explanation:  East Germany was under the influence and strict patronage of the Soviet Union as all the countries of the Eastern Bloc. In such circumstances, a one-party, i.e. a communist system ruled, and anyone who opposed it or thought differently, was sharply politically prosecuted. Also, in the conditions of the command economy, the standard of living was the same for all when the people were in question, and in essence this standard was not particularly good.
