The main reason behind the attack was American commitment to ensure that communism did not take root in the Latin America world, in line with the domino theory.

Cuban missile crisis of 1992; it was sparked off by the deployment of soviet nuclear weapons in Cuba.It was the highest point in the cold war,as MUD(mutually assured destruction) had been achieved. It was resolved through secret negotiations whereby Khrushchev agreed to remove the arsenals, and the USA secretly agreed to remove theirs in Turkey,and also committed never to invade Cuba.
