This word is used more often to describe places that are of great stature, grandly made symbolizing the riches and wealth the owner must have. Though it may be big, it doesn't necessarily have to symbolize any form of secrecy to it's name. So also, the big house of General Zaroff also doesn't seem t have any form of secrecy to it. Rather, we see the protagonist Rainsford looking at the place from a far distance, with blinding lights all from one enormous building.
