Censorship can affect a free society by limiting the words and actions of people who wish to express themselves in certain ways. This restriction of freedom however is often necessary in order to preserve a functioning society.

The Spanish Inquisition expelled the moors and jews from Spain. Beginning in Granada in 1502, moors were given the choice of converting from Islam to Christianity or face expulsion. Before that, in 1492 a Decree gave the jews the choice betwwen conversion or expulsion.
