He was a victim of that selection, and he does not believe in God anymore, he says he he had no faith or strenght. .  This quote represents Akiba's feelings ...but as soon as he felt the first cracks forming in his faith, he had lost his reason for struggling and had begun to die".

On the other hand Stein is an Eliezer's relative, they found at Auschwitz and Stein is told that his family is alive and they are healthy and doing well, but it is a lie, Eliezer was lying. This is the reason to Stein to want to survive.
