The event that was the main reason that New Mexico was finally made a state was "the Navajo were moved in the long walk."

Not only the Navajo Native American tribe but the Apache too presented strong resistance to being removed from the territory.  It was until chief Geronimo -leader of the Apaches- surrendered in 1886, that many white settlers started to occupy the land in New Mexico and the population expanded. Finally, on January 6, 1912, New Mexico was admitted as the 47th state of the Union.
