The Pilgrims, originally know as the English Puritans were heavily persecuted in England, in their native village of Scrooby, Nottinghamshire.

This lead the whole group to move to a more friendly environment in Netherlands. They first settled in Amsterdam and later moved to the city of Leiden.

While they were comfortable in their new areas, life gradually became more difficult. The Pilgrims were basically farmers and were used to the village life.

Leidin was a bustling industrial city where work for Pilgrims was difficult. The Pilgrims also had problems with the English Crown which eventually started to pressure them in Netherlands as well.

The Pilgrims wanted to find a new place to go which was as far from England as possible. They also wanted to move to a place which was similar to England, which had fertile land where they could live peacefully.

Massachusetts they believed would be the perfect place to achieve all that.
