According to this theory there are six stages through which a person changes their behavior.

  1. Precontemplation: In this stage the person does not intend to take any action in the near future.
  2. Contemplation: In this stage the person understands that their behavior is problematic and decides whether it is beneficial to change their habit or not.
  3. Preparation: In this stage the person is ready to take steps towards changing their behavior.
  4. Action: In this stage the person takes action in order to change their behavior.
  5. Maintenance: In this stage the person tries to sustain their behavior.
  6. Termination: In this stage the person has completely lost their habit they wanted to change and have no will to go back to their old ways.
