In colonial times, libel referred to any statements that criticized or conflicted with the working of the government. It didn’t matter if the charges or accusations were true. During Peter Zenger’s case, his lawyer demanded that the truthfulness of Zenger’s publication be examined. He convinced the jury that it was important that people have the right to tell the truth about government officials even if it was against the law at the time.
